Sternum is a flat bone located at the midline of chest and it is also called as breast bone. It protects the internal organs such as heart, lungs and oesophagus from any kind of injuries.
In human body there are 24 ribs which are split into pairs. Pairs 1-5 are attached directly to the sternum through the costal cartilage, pairs 6-10 are attach indirectly and 11- 12 are floating ribs which are not attached.
The first seven pairs which are directly attached to the sternum by postal cartilage are called as true ribs. The 8-10 pairs are called false ribs which not join the sternum.
If all ribs are connected to the sternum then the person will suffer from painful sneezing and coughing, swelling and bruising on the cartilages because it cannot hold the weight of the bones alone.
There will be difficult in breathing sometimes numbness and extreme pain.
Costochondritis is the condition when cartilages get inflamed there will be a sharp pain under the rib while breathing.
If all ribs are connected to the sternum then there will be muscle spasm, it is a involuntary and sudden contraction of a muscle. It can move the joints associated with the sternum out of place because the muscles which are tight will limit the flexibility of the joints.
The internal organs which are protected with thoracic cage with rib bones which are attached to the sternum if all the ribs are attached to the sternum than the organs will not be at proper place such as lungs, heart etc. and it can leads to some serious diseases.
